Furniture as Architecture
I began as a sculptor, then became an architect and designer.
Many of these pieces were originally made as custom furniture for architectural clients.
In all my work I first define an objective and then develop a principle on which to base the design.
I work towards a clarity of structure and the efficient use of materials
and methods of construction. The best designs develop in their own unique directions and are always a surprise.
My trestle tables have an innovative structure that is much stronger than conventional designs.
Each trestle leg is fabricated from a short length of steel beam stabilized with
stainless steel tie rods. The beam section at the core of the trestle assembly becomes an iconic
signature, a component that visually explains the structure of the table.
All of our materials and methods of manufacture follow accepted standards of sustainability. We use
FSC certified, local or farmed hardwoods that are finished with tung oil. Appleply plywood is FSC certified,
meets new environmental regulations, and is finished with UV cured epoxy acrylate. Beam sections
are cut from remainder lengths, and steel parts are finished with powder coat, black oxide or low VOC paints.
Aluminum bars are machined, hand polished and anodized.
